Manny Dickson

I am an Experience Designer with a background in Industrial Design.

I specialise in creating seamless experiences for customers and users for digital products, services and business. I start by researching and identifying core needs and behaviours of users and how they interact with these touch points.

I solve problems...

I solve problems using a human-centred design process.
Everything starts with understanding the user and what their needs and habits are.
I solve problems with curiosity, insightfulness and pragmatism.

Expert Reviews

An expert review provides a fast way to examine your existing or proposed design. These reviews include best practice guidelines and user interface style guide adherence. A design review can check your new/current design for known issues, problems and opportunities. A list of heuristics guidelines and usability best practices are evaluated specifically to your industry and or product.

User Research

User research is vital to understand the behaviour, patterns and cultural triggers of a target market. This research aims to interpret how and why users relate to your brand. Whether it's a purchase decision or enquiry, aligning design decisions to actual user behaviour is vital. Gaining empathy from both field studies and persona generation are powerful tools for understanding users.

Information Architecture

Information Architects work to create usable content structures out of complex sets of information. This is achieved by collaborating, usability testing, persona creation, and user flow diagrams, to name only a few. The content hierarchy and how information is organised on a site is vital to facilitate key user tasks and to achieve business goals.

Wireframes and Interactive Prototypes

Every design has an interaction model which dictates how a user interacts with an interface. Wireframes will map out the flow, navigation and use of each aspect of functionality. The interaction design process starts with mapping persona needs and desires to the wireframe. Wireframes will start at a low-fidelity and increase with user testing.

Usability Testing

Usability testing is the most powerful tool to discover if your design works. Usability testing can help avoid features that confuse or complicate. It can give you an insight into how your users think. User testing is the best way to improve the quality or reduce the risk of delivering a poor experience.

User Interface Design

Good visual design impacts the perceived ease of use, trustworthiness and intention to action. The choice of graphic design, icons, typography and user interface elements are hugely important. Key elements of visual design emerge in the high-fidelity prototype production.

How I approach design problems

The double diamond model is a simple way of mapping the design process. It is divided into four distinct phases, Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver, it marks out the divergent and convergent stages of the design process. These stages are made up of number of activities or tools which can be used depending on the desired outcome. Below is an explanation of the different stages in the double diamond process. It will clearly demonstrate the method of diverging and converging. This process allows you to take any design brief from concept to successful outcome.

About

Growing up in Sydney in the early 1980's, I spent most of my childhood playing with Lego and Meccano. From a young age I was fascinated with how things worked and how I could build them. As I matured, this passion turned into skills that have paved the way for my creative career.

I started my professional career in Industrial Design (product design and marketing) where I learnt the importance of understanding the end users needs. It was during this experience that I learnt fundamental design tools and methodologies that allowed me to really appreciate  a customer-centric design approach to problem solving.

From here I did something that  a lot of people do at least once in their life. I took what I had learnt from one industry and used it to develop my skills in another. I learnt to quickly adapted to my surroundings and continued to obtain knowledge in solving problems in a professional nature. I have gained experience working in a diverse range of industries such as; Sales, Business Management (FMCG), Healthcare and Advertising, They have all helped me become a great UX Designer.

Testimonials

“I insist on a lot of time being spent, almost every day, to just sit and think. That is very uncommon in American business. I read and think. So I do more reading and thinking, and make less impulse decisions than most people in business. I do it because I like this kind of life.”
